MySpace Safety Tips

With increasing awareness of the dangers of online predators on youngsters using MySpace and other parts of the internet comes increasing attention to measures designed to protect children and teenagers from dangerous situations. Often youngsters are not aware of the risks inherent in telling friends they meet in chat rooms or by email contact personal information that can allow them to endanger themselves. Here are a few tips to increase your safety when using MySpace that will be of interest to youngsters and parents alike.

An increasing awareness that MySpace is public is probably the single most important safety tip regarding MySpace. If it's information that is private, don't publish it on MySpace or anywhere else. This could include birth date, social security number, the school the child attends, or the telephone number. Don't publish a picture or information that would embarrass or hurt you or someone else.

Limit the list of people that are included in the friends list. More MySpace friends, particularly if they are people you don't know outside of MySpace, is not necessarily better. Be particularly wary of meeting someone you only know through their MySpace information.

Finally, honesty about how old you are is critical. Falsifying your age can result in removal from MySpace.
